Nice breakdown of your Tarboy techniques! I'll be checking that .fla out.

amazing work and thanks for sharing your techniques with us.

My pleasure :)

You went to qca, are you based in brisbane?
I liked those spark effects very much. Would you consider yourself more inclined to vfx animation or character animation?

Yep, I want to QCA and I'm still based in Brisbane (for the time being! :P)

It's hard to say which way I'm more inclined as I love both equally. I enjoy special effects as I find it rewarding to find technical solutions to create pleasing eye candy. I approach animation in a similar way, mostly I just love tinkering around :)

You sir, inspire me. Thanks for sharing that .fla, but I'm really curious...I bet the full .fla of Tarboy was huge, how did you manage to work after it got so long it lagged? You made several files and then put them all together, or something else? Hope you can answer.

Yeah that's correct. I make a habbit now of splitting my animation across multiple FLAs, and combining them at the end. It's always nerve wracking, because sometimes while combining the new scenes, Flash will simply say there's not enough memory.

Love your style man, and thanks for taking the time to share this :D Can't wait to chill with you guys!

Likewise! Only one more week to go!

Thanks for this, man. I always loved how clean and fast your effects were when it came to the glows/flashes/action, and it's great to see that your approach is actually quite practical... also really awesome to see someone else who doesn't resort to aftereffects when the going gets rough. Nice job as always!

Yeah, I love seeing how far Flash can be pushed, and it's interesting to see how finding out new ways to use old features can really open it up. Plus, I hate the fact that I can't retain my work in vector form, which is one reason I try to limit my After Effects use.

I'm not sure if you have mentioned this or not, but are you going to come out with a Tarboy 2?

Tarboy II is an ongoing project, but it's release is still most likely a while away :)

if tarboy was good then tarboy 2 is in my opinion better

And I thought my libraries were a mess ;)
Thank you very much for sharing this, this is great learning material

EPIC~!!!

Interesting techniques in that FLA... Alot of shit there I never touch.

what the F, there were 3D models in Tarboy??

Anyway the sparks n splashes n whatnot are all great, are you as big a Michael Gagne fan as I am or what?

Tarboy's head for a couple of scenes was constructed in 3D, as well as the waving liquid effect and insect laser eyes.

Michel Gagne is one of my favorite artists. I showed him Tarboy via email, and I was lucky enough to get a reply. He give me a link to his upcoming work, Sensology, which is amazing too :)

If anyone would have asked me if you would ever provide an FLA for special fx reference, I would have said no way in hell..This will help me out tremendously! Thank you so much!!
